Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father had left the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mom, grandmother, and godparents. While she was a small girl, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford started acting in her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that the school was not right for her. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place at the third time, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime, she had already made her TV debut on a 1991 episode in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually joining in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
